For the love of KitKat and M&Ms

This cake was a surprise for my middle son, for his 6th birthday

We have three boys and are very aware of the middle child getting lost in the shuffle – we have several vocal other middle children in the family who remind us of this.

We are so aware of the middle child syndrome, that maybe we even over compensate – another post for another day!

His birthday also happens to be in January, right when the holiday burn out happens to we try to make his birthday a big deal.

I saw this on Pinterest and thought it would be fun to try.

This was also my first go at homemade frosting, not the canned stuff.

I used a simple box cake mix, and a load of KitKat’s. I used 8-inch rounds and I should have used 9s, as the cakes were too tall for the KitKats. Adding the M&Ms was a little tricky but worked out well.

This was a real hit with everyone. It was a simple concept with a huge impact.

There was no looking back after this cake!
